Soroptimist 2008-2009 Grant Awards to Clubs

For the 2008-2009 club year, SIA received 97 proposals requesting more than US $674,000 in funding. A task force made up of members of the SIA Program Council was assembled to review proposals and recommend funding levels. Thirty-seven projects were awarded a total of US$175,000 in funding.

Among them are three Midwestern Region clubs:

SI Chicago, IL (Midwestern) $1,500, Body and Sold: This grant will be used for a production of "Body and Sold," a performance about the sexual trafficking of women and girls. The club will also host a panel discussion after the performance. Funds will be used for production costs, including rental space, printing and advertising.

SI Indianapolis, IN
(Midwestern) $1,500, Making a House a Home: This project will refurbish the computer center/library at Ada's Place, a transitional housing complex for women. Club members will utilize the computer center to conduct classes on study skills, computer literacy and interviewing skills. Funds will be used to purchase furniture, paint and educational support materials.

SI Canton/Stark County, OH
(Midwestern) $10,000, Furnishing a Fresh Start: This grant will provide home furnishings to women transitioning from a domestic violence shelter to their own apartment or house. The grant will also be used to help upgrade the shelter. Funds will be used to purchase vouchers that the women can redeem at furniture and appliance stores and to purchase paint, new mattresses and bedding for the shelter.
